Thanks for being part of... WWF's Earth Hour

Our night was a huge success - thank you so much! On Saturday night WWF estimates that over a billion people across the world united in switching off their lights for one hour to show they care about climate change.

Earth Hour's success is down to you - individuals and families switching off at home, or companies large and small, local government, schools and community groups. And of course thanks to all WWF's regular supporters and volunteers.

The statistics are still coming in, but the latest news is that over 4,000 cities and towns in 126 countries took part in WWF's Earth Hour 2010.
Global landmarks switching off included Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Great Pyramids, Rome's Coliseum and Forbidden City in China.

In the UK, other landmarks included Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge, the National Gallery and National Theatre and Wembley Stadium Arch in London; the Senedd, The Wales Millennium Centre, and Millennium Stadium in Cardiff; Stormont, City Hall and the Wheel in Belfast, Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish Parliament, Wallace Monument and the Falkirk Wheel, to name just a few.

Earth Hour was all about spreading the message that we care about our world, and we received great support from global and UK press, TV, radio and the online community. A big thank-you from everyone at WWF for signing up and taking part in this year's event. Longest 5-a-side football match, 27 hours and 15 minutes.

This record was authenticated by Guinness World Records 21st December 2009.

Two teams scored 898 goals.

Score - Radio Basingstoke Bandits (362) vs. Collingwood College Challengers (536)

Played at the Collingwood College on the weekend of the 17th/18th October 2009. Raised £1,400 for Charity. NSPCC and the Princess Alice Hospice and HART Wildlife Players came from Surrey and Hampshire, which included Nathan Doublet and Sean Wards from Basingstoke.

Top scorer at 130 was Tom Quy from the Radio Basingstoke Bandits.

Guinness World Record Attempt - UPDATE

Hi all,

Hope you are well.

The Radio Basingstoke sponsored Guinness World Record Marathon (at 5-aside -football, in aid of Charity) was beaten on the weekend of 17/18 October.

Radio Basingstoke Bandits & Collingwood College Challengers beat the record of 26 hours by 1 hour. Congratulations go out to the exhausted 16 football players, 2 of whom - Nathan Doublet & Sean Ward - are from Basingstoke. We also had the player that scored the most goals on our team, Tom Quy, with a score of 130 !!!.

Many thanks to the volunteer Referee's from www.minirefs.co.uk, the adjudicaters & witness's, Portsmouth FC for donating all the kit, St Johns Ambulance, The Short Film Company, Pyramid Visuals & to the BBC for the publicity. Not forgetting the organiser John Morgan of Surrey County Council.

Guinness World Record Attempt

Just thought I'd keep you updated on the latest news from the upcoming Guinness World Record attempt, which is due to commence on Saturday, October 17th (Saturday of this week). Please come along to watch if you get the chance, as your support is very important.

PRESS RELEASE

Guinness World Record Attempt John Morgan of Surrey County Council has organised a 5 aside world record breaking attempt, in aid of charity. The charities that will benefit are NSPCC, Princess Alice Hospice and Hart Wildlife. In conjunction with The Guinness Book of Records, with the support of 16 footballers, several referees, adjudicators, & witness's the event will take place at Collingwood College Sports Arena, Mitcham Road, Camberley, Surrey GU15 4AE from Saturday 17th October at 10am through, hopefully, to 1pm Sunday or longer!

The Mayor of Surrey Heath will start the event and there will be several Basingstoke & Deane as well as Surrey Heath councillors on hand to witness the occasion. There will also be live music, from solo artists, duo's plus a trio of beauties 'Dollymixx' during Saturday afternoon and evening. There will be a soft drinks stall on hand, also snacks available & of course the inevitable burger van. Plus the St Johns Ambulance will be in attendance in case of injury.

Are you retired, disabled, a student, are you stuck at home with time on your hands, are you looking for something interesting to do, live within Basingstoke or surrounding area, have your own PC and you are PC literate? We need a reliable person to spare a few hours a day/week to help run a world wide internet radio station, to assist with the programme scheduling etc. No expense to yourself and no experience necessary, training will be given, either at your home or on one of our PCs. This is a unique opportunity to learn something slightly different, and work from home!

Guilfest 2009 and Basingstoke Live 2009

The weekend commencing July 10 was always going to be one worth marking on the calendar, and it will definitely be one that will stay in my memory for quite some time.

With a fantastic line-up including Motörhead, Toploader, Athlete, The Charlatans, Brian Wilson, Will Young, The Stranglers, The Happy Mondays, The Lightning Seeds and Goldie Lookin Chain, Guilfest 2009 offered three very varied days of music for all.

With two stages (the main stage and an Ents 24 stage) and four tents (including Rock and Dance tents), it was difficult to know what to head to first – with so much on offer.
Upon arrival, early Friday evening, my photographer and I had time to check out some of Tragedy (a Bee Gees metal tribute act), as well as Attack! Attack!
While the first might sound like quite a bizarre mix on paper, I was quite impressed with what I heard, and it certainly seems like a good way of keeping the Bee Gees’ hits alive. The Welsh band Attack! Attack! were great to watch in the Rock tent. For such a fledgling band (born circa 2006), these guys came across as the complete performers, with a heavy-enough, but well arranged and layered sound.

The Guildford-born band The Stranglers took to the stage early Friday evening, delivering a hugely entertaining and energetic performance. This was definitely well worth the watch, even just for Golden Brown live. After a little bit of a wait (and a change to even louder speakers), Motörhead came on and played to quite a large and diverse crowd, consisting of older fans as well as a younger generation, who certainly didn’t mind the loud music on a Friday evening!

With a compulsory finish for music at 11pm (owing to noise regulations), the very strong Robin Ince-headlined comedy tent was left to carry on the night into the early hours. In my opinion, the earlier finish, the well-paced and organised nature of the festival and the range of performers and appeal to all ages in the crowd symbolised the best strengths for Guilfest. In cementing upon the family friendly nature of the festival after winning the Best Family Festival award last year, I feel that this furthered approach is really the way forward – offering something for everyone, of all ages.

This was particularly evident on the Saturday, with the West Ham singer Linda Lewis fighting worsening weather conditions, which apparently didn’t dampen either the singer or the building crowd’s spirits. After this, Saturday afternoon just got better and better, even if the weather didn’t. Toploader, who have been on hiatus since 2003, have now reformed and are back – better than ever. Renewed and invigorated, the group played some new material as well as some hits of old. While it was nice to see the crowd really getting into Dancing in the Moonlight, it was even better to see a band back writing, performing and enjoying their craft.

Athlete took the main stage of Guilfest into the early evening of Saturday, with a very popular set. As a slightly more mellow offering, it worked well in contrast against The Charlatans, who followed shortly afterwards.

Their frontman, a well noted and accomplished singer and performer, was definitely in the mood for the evening. The group played out to a very eager audience, as numbers peaked, spreading out to the back further and further.

After some wait, the rain hammered the fields and people waiting for Brian Wilson, but no one was prepared to come so far and falter when faced with the prospect of seeing the legendary songwriter, performer and core member of The Beach Boys. Wilson came out at half nine, with his band, and played to a respectful audience, happy to see such an icon in music still going strong. The group played some of The Beach Boys’ greatest hits, including Sloop John B, Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Surfin’ USA. For me personally, it was a dream come true to watch Wilson live, and it was difficult not to be impressed by the legacy of a true innovator of music.

Friday and Saturday at Guilfest were absolutely brilliant, and certainly did not disappoint. My only regret was that I couldn’t be in every place at once and see absolutely everything on offer.

For Sunday, July 11, I chose to attend Basingstoke Live – headlined by The Beat. The Beat were actually at Guilfest earlier in the day, but made the journey down the motorway for an early evening start at Basingstoke Live, which was also threatened to be hampered by rain. However, strong spirits again prevailed, as did probable conditioning to the unpredictable British weather!
Originally formed in 1978, ska group The Beat have had a long and certifiable contribution to British music. This was evidenced by the inclusion of Ranking Junior alongside frontman Ranking Roger and by the sheer mixture of young and old in the crowd for another family friendly day of fun. The combination of new and future fans and those who appreciated and loved The Beat back in the day made it clear that The Beat are still very relevant to music. This was further evidenced by infusing music and politics, with some modern sentiments which the crowd definitely approved of. All I shall say is that The Beat still proved their heart and dedication to British music, sounded great and were awesome to watch live.

It wasn’t just about The Beat though, with so many local musicians (many of whom I still love to watch and have reviewed frequently over the past two years) taking part in a great addition to the live music scene.
Three days of such live music makes you realise that it really is all out there to be enjoyed, and reminded me why for all the trials and tribulations of industry, that music really is the best, bringing everyone together. It also just goes to show that there are so many great performers and musicians out there, and some are closer then you might think.

Just a quick update on a very exciting event that's taking place this October - and we need your help to be a part of it! In this charity event, a group of footballers will try to break the current record in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest game of five-a-side, by playing for 24 hours.

However, we desperately need your help to make sure this good cause succeeds - we need need refs, adjudicators, medical staff, witnesses and lots of supporters! So if you know anyone who can make it and would be willing to help, please come and join us.

The event is to be held on Saturday, October 17/ Sunday, October 18 at Collingwood College, Camberley, Surrey (England)

Back online, and keeping strong

Hi all,

Firstly, I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the many people who have continued to show us support over the past few months.

Getting Radio Basingstoke up-and-running has been no easy task, but I am glad to say that we are keeping strong and continually improving on our already existing set-up.

Recently, we have started using a new streaming system, which will increase the sound quality of Radio Basingstoke. If you add that to our continually expanding team, which now welcomes a marketing manager, and a wide variety of shows (playing 24-7, I might add), then the future for Radio Basingstoke looks very bright indeed- and we will keep working for as long as it takes for RB to be the best it can be.

But Radio Basingstoke cannot have achieved any of the success that it has without its loyal listeners, so we would like to say thank you for the support, and please keep spreading the word - www.radiobasingstoke.co.uk
